Welcome to the CHOICES - KNOW section. The answers to questions given below are correct to the best of our knowledge. - Which A levels are compulsory?
- What grades in GCSE Maths, English and Science must I have?
- Will I be penalised if I re-sit a module exam?
- Do I need to take 4 A2 modules?
- Which AS do I drop when I start Year 13?
Answers
Which A levels are compulsory?
The majority of medical schools require A levels in chemistry, whilst others will accept AS level in chemistry, depending upon the other qualifications being offered. Some require biology at A level. This is an example of a typical requirement:
"Chemistry at grade A. Biology at grade A or Human Biology at grade A. Grades AAB plus an AS level".

What grades in GCSE Maths, English and Science must I have?
The number and level of grades will vary between medical schools. This is a typical requirement: "At least six subjects at grade A including all three Sciences or the double Science award. Mathematics and English Language at grade B or above. An A grade at Physics AS level is acceptable in lieu of a grade A Physics at GCSE".

Will I be penalised if I re-sit a module exam?
Only Cambridge issues a supplementary questionnaire asking for all your module scores. If you 'cash in' your AS after Year 12 that grade must go on your UCAS form but not the individual module grades/scores unless you want to. Discuss with your tutor and/or exams officer about 'declining the award' if you did badly in an AS and then the AS becomes 'pending' until you complete your A2s.

Do I need to take 4 A2 module exams?
No. All offers are made on the basis of 3 A level (AS+A2) grades but will often ask for a fourth AS level.

Which AS do I drop when I start Year 13?
Often a difficult choice. You only need 3 A levels so the choice to complete 4 A levels must only be made if it is not likely to compromise your grades. AAB is a better entry qualification than ABBB. Your choice to drop may be obvious if it is your weakest subject, providing it is not essential such as Chemistry. Medical schools often like to see a non-science fourth AS. Check individual entry profiles.
