Ear/Eye Clinic
In this practical session you will use use an ophthalmoscope to examine the eye and an otoscope to examine the ear

Examining the eye using an ophthalmoscope
|
Ophthalmoscope
A very simple examination of the eye would involve observing the normal functioning of the muscles controlling eye movement and the normal pupil reflex to light.
To determine if there are some other conditions that might affect normal vision, it is necessary to examine the retina at the back of the eye. This is done using an instrument called called an ophthalmoscope.

Working in groups you will receive instruction on how to use the ophthalmoscope. Your aim will be to try to observe the retina at the back of the eye. You will use each other as both observers and 'patients'. There will also be some model boxes of the eye, that will allow you to observe both the normal retina and several common disease conditions.
Your goals for this exercise will be:
- To treat your colleague 'patients' with professional care and courtesy
- To try and observe the retina with the ophthalmoscope
- To observe some images of abnormal conditions of the eye
- Using provided guidelines of disease characteristics, you must try to make a clinical decision about the nature of the different conditions in consultation with your colleagues

Examining the ear using an otoscope

Otoscope
The ear can be affected by many different conditions and infections.
It is possible to observe some of the internal structures of the ear. This is done using an instrument called an otoscope.

Working in groups you will receive instruction on how to use the otoscope. Your aim will be to try to observe the translucent eardrum and some of the structures behind the eardrum. You will use each other as both observers and 'patients'. There will also be some model boxes of the ear, that will allow you to observe both the normal eardrum and several common disease conditions.
Your goals for this exercise will be:
- To treat your colleague 'patients' with professional care and courtesy
- To try and observe the eardrum and associated structures with the otoscope
- To observe some images of abnormal conditions of the ear
- Using provided guidelines of disease characteristics, you must try to make a clinical decision about the nature of the different conditions in consultation with your colleagues
