Becoming a Winning Candidate
The Medlink top ten tips for a successful personal statement
Prepare an online portfolio and have a presence online. Why not add a URL to your UCAS personal statement? This could be to a blog about charity work you have done for instance. (Think outside the box)
Start writing early - it might sound simple but this is so important. Remember you will be asked in your interview about your personal statement so make sure you are enthusiastic and can talk about what you have written.
Interview your friends about your personal statement. This will help you see your own flaws. See how it holds up under close scrutiny.
Remember the advice from the Edge session. Target particular medical schools. What research are they involved with? Does it suit your interests? If so write about it.
Make the most of what you have achieved, but don’t lie. Again a simple tip, but you will be caught out!
Make the most of your work experience; often it’s not the quantity but the quality that counts. What did you learn? We recommend that you keep a diary throughout work experience. What interesting cases did you see? What did it teach you about the profession?
Don’t waffle or repeat yourself, be clear and to the point. You must use perfect English and make sure you check both spelling and grammar.
Make sure your tutor knows why you want to be a doctor. Work together so your personal statement compliments your referee statement. (Remember they are there to help you)
Make the most of your experiences and responsibilities you have had in school or college. What skills have you developed from these experiences?
Your concluding paragraph needs to summarise what qualities you have that will make you not just a successful university student studying medicine, but also a good doctor.
